Organizational decision-making and learning are people-intensive processes. Individuals learn and share what they have learned with those “nearby” them, who in turn share knowledge with others. In this manner, knowledge propagates or “spirals” throughout the organization and beyond (Nonaka 1994, 1998; Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1995). This growth of knowledge and the understanding it brings enable organizations to react quickly to changing environments, a necessity for survival. However, because these needs are so strongly based in the social perspective, we believe that technological support of these systems should have a foundation that can recognize the social aspects of knowledge creation and use (see, for example, Brown and Duguid 2000).

Researchers and practitioners interested in submitting papers to this minitrack are encouraged to explore knowledge management (KM) architectures, tools, and Web 2.0/3.0 technologies such as mashups in the context of knowledge systems – for example as related to supporting knowledge use and transfer or to organizational learning, particularly from a design science perspective. We welcome a wide range of approaches that focus on architectural design for knowledge-based or learning organizations.

Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to:

* Methodologies, tools, processes, technologies for developing knowledge and/or organizational memory systems

* Empirical studies of designing and using KM tools and knowledge systems

* Systems design for social knowledge creation and use, e.g. social media system architectures

* Knowledge services and mashups

* Web 2.0/3.0 technologies as part of knowledge systems

* KM tools that map, track, or visualize social networks to facilitate knowledge sharing

* Evaluation of knowledge retrieval and representation methods

* Using semantic technologies to implement knowledge retrieval and representation

* Developing processes and systems for knowledge visualization techniques

* Science of design and design theory

* Philosophical foundations of design science

* Evaluation of design science research

* Design processes

* Representations for design

* Design evolution

* Business and organizational design

* Design for innovation

* Design economics

* Modularity and rules in design

* Architectures for design

* Meta-design control in design

* Design of software-intensive systems

* Learning-based systems design

Co-chairs:

Stefan Smolnik (Primary Contact)

Institute of Research on Information Systems (IRIS)

European Business School (EBS)

International University Schloss Reichartshausen

Rheingaustr. 1

65375 Oestrich-Winkel, Germany

Phone: +49-6723-991-246

Fax: +49-6723-991-255

Email: stefan.smolnik|at|ebs.edu

WWW: http://www.ebs.edu/iris

Nassim Belbaly

GSCM Montpellier Business School

2300, Avenue des Moulins

34185 Montpellier Cedex 4, France

Phone: +33 (0) 4 67 10 25 16

Fax: +33(0) 4 67 45 13 56

E-mail: n.belbaly|at|supco-montpellier.fr

Richard Orwig

Accounting and Information Systems

Weis School of Business

Susquehanna University

514 University Ave.

Selinsgrove, PA 17870, USA

Phone: (570) 372-4380

E-mail: orwig|at|susqu.edu

HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Therefore, a high maturity level of KM research has been achieved. However, organizational KM initiatives are more and more faced with budget cuts and justification demands due to intense competition in today’s business environments. The influences of the rapid pace of globalization and of the ongoing liberalization of national and international markets lead to the emergence of increased pressure on existing companies. Project managers of KM initiatives like Chief Knowledge Officers need to justify their budgets and thus are in need of qualitative and quantitative evidence of the initiatives’ success. In addition, ROI calculations and traditional accounting approaches do not tell an adequate story when proposing knowledge-based initiatives. This minitrack explores research into strategies, methodologies, and stories that relate to measure this success. In addition, this minitrack will be used to explore the bodies of performance measurements that define the current state of research in measuring KM, organizational memory, and organizational learning success. Eventually, another purpose of this minitrack is to present research on how to value knowledge-based initiatives.

Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to:
* Frameworks and models for assessing knowledge management and/or organizational memory systems
* Methodologies and processes for measuring knowledge management and/or organizational memory success and performance
* Impact of knowledge management strategy, organization, systems, culture, and other issues on knowledge management/organizational memory success
* Organizational effectiveness/efficiency due to knowledge management/organizational memory/organizational learning, knowledge and organizational memory use
* Knowledge management, organizational memory, and organizational learning metrics
* Knowledge management, organizational memory, and organizational learning success factors and key performance indicators
* Benchmarking of knowledge management/organizational memory initiatives
* Case studies of knowledge management and organizational memory success and performance measurements
* Measuring knowledge management and/or organizational memory performance in global organizations and globally dispersed communities
* Effectiveness and/or efficiency of knowledge management/organizational memory systems
* Modeling and measuring the impact of social software on knowledge management performance
* Defining knowledge management and organizational memory success
* Rigorous anecdotes and user stories and their theoretical basis to facilitate the value of knowledge-based initiatives
* Developing grounded theory approaches to valuing knowledge-based initiatives

Co-chairs:
Murray E. Therefore, author name(s) are not to be included on the manuscript during the June 15 submission process.

Additional details may be found on HICSS primary website: http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu</at></at></at></at></at></at>

Call for Papers: ICIS 2008's HCI track

CfP: HCI Track at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2008
The ICIS 2008 Conference Committee and the Association for Information Systems are pleased to invite scholars to participate in the Twenty-Ninth annual International Conference on Information Systems.

(ICIS 2008) to be held in Paris, France, December 14-17, 2008.

The ICIS 2008 Program Committee invites submissions across 18 tracks, including our Theme track of “Human Computer Interaction.” At ICIS 2008, we will explore implications of the increasingly fast growth of this field, fueled by more powerful hardware and software, the Internet and increasingly interactive Web, and ever smarter phones. Technologies move ever more quickly from research to development, from the student and the consumer to enterprise adoption, raising issues that can be technical, behavioral, business value, and ethical.

Please note: ICIS is a highly selective conference, with acceptance rates of about 15% in recent years.

Human-Computer Interaction Track Description

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an interdisciplinary research and practice field that deals with the design, evaluation, and use of interactive technologies. The field at large has experienced increasingly fast growth during the last decade due to the pervasiveness of IT in our lives. New and exciting research topics have emerged in response to technological developments, evolving organizational needs, and the rapid growth in number and variety of IT users. For example, whereas in the past organizations focused on internal end users, today many organizations use IT to directly interface consumers and other external constituencies via Web portals. Recently, the field has experienced a noticeable transformation in practice and research towards dealing with broader aspects of the interaction, such as designing for emotions and broadening user experiences.

We welcome high-quality, complete and research-in-progress papers that have theoretical, empirical, design, methodological, and practical implications for human-computer interaction. We particularly encourage submission of work that deals with organizational and managerial aspects of HCI. Authors from outside the IS field are encouraged to verify ahead of time with the track’s co-chairs whether or not the nature of their submission is appropriate for this conference.

Examples of specific topics include but are not limited to:

Psychological and social aspects of human interaction with technology

Personalization and adaptive interfaces

Pervasive and ubiquitous computing

Website design and evaluation

HCI aspects of new platforms such as mobile and surface computing (e.g., tabletop and wall displays)

Usability engineering and measurement

Aesthetic and affective computing

Online trust and online communities

User-centered system development methodologies

Design implications of diversity in users, technologies and environments

Impacts of interactive technologies on life at work and home

The business value of HCI design and evaluation techniques

Computer-mediated group collaboration

Please note the following:
1. Jennex, San Diego State University, and Dr. Stefan Smolnik, European Business School (EBS), Germany

Introduction:
Knowledge management (KM) and knowledge management system (KMS) success is an issue that requires exploration. During the Knowledge Management Foundations workshop held at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-39) in January 2006, it was agreed that for the credibility of the KM discipline, it is important to define KM success. Additionally, HICSS-40 (2007) and HICSS-41 (2008) hosted each a minitrack focused on presenting research on KM success and measurement. Jennex, Smolnik, and Croasdell presented a definition of KM success based on two exploratory surveys generated from the literature. The definition presented was: KM success is a multidimensional concept. It is defined by capturing the right knowledge, getting the right knowledge to the right user, and using this knowledge to improve organizational and/or individual performance. KM success is measured by means of the dimensions: impact on business processes, impact on strategy, leadership, and knowledge content. However, much work remains to be done in establishing a foundation for KM success and acceptable measures. Additionally, other aspects of KM measurement need to be explored and established.

Objective of the Book:
This book will aim to establish relevant theoretical frameworks and present the latest empirical research findings in the area of KM success and measurement. It will be written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of KM success and measurement and/or who need to implement KM measurement in organizations.

Target Audience:
The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the field of information and knowledge management. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support executives concerned with the management of expertise, knowledge, information, and organizational development in different types of work communities and environments.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* KM Success definitions and models
* KM critical success factors
* KM metrics
* KM measurement
* Organizational issues with respect to KM success and measurement
* KM success and measurement implementation issues
* Case studies and empirical research into KM success and measurement

Submission Procedure:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before March 31, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by April 28, 2008, about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 31, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), www.igi-global.com, publisher of the IGI Publishing (formerly Idea Group Publishing), Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing, Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), and Medical Information Science Reference imprints.

Inquiries and submissions can be forwarded electronically (Word document) or by email to:
Dr. Murray E. Jennex, email: murphjen|at|<at>aol.com or mjennex<at>mail|at|sdsu.edu
or
Dr. Stefan Smolnik, email: Stefan.Smolnik<at>|at|ebs.edu</at></at></at>
